How to Write a Business Plan That Gets Approved

28 July 2026

A business plan is the single most important document in any funding application. Whether you are applying for a Government Start-Up Loan, a fixed business loan, or approaching an investor, the quality of your plan will determine whether you succeed. Yet most business owners underestimate what a strong plan actually requires.

Start with an executive summary. This is a concise overview of your business, what it does, who it serves, and what you are asking for. Keep it to one page. Lenders read dozens of applications and your summary needs to make them want to read on.

The market analysis section should demonstrate that you understand your industry and your customers. Who are your target customers? What problem do you solve for them? Who are your competitors and how do you differentiate? Use real data where possible, even if it is publicly available industry research.

Your financial projections are where many applications fall short. You need a profit and loss forecast, a cash flow forecast, and a balance sheet projection, typically covering three years. These figures must be realistic and consistent with each other. Lenders are experienced at spotting projections that have been inflated to make the numbers work.

Finally, your plan must address risk. What could go wrong, and how would you respond? Lenders are not looking for a guarantee that nothing will go wrong. They are looking for evidence that you have thought carefully about your business and that you have contingency plans in place.
