How to Price Your Services for Profitability

18 May 2026

Pricing is one of the decisions that new business owners get wrong most often. The instinct is to price low to win customers, but this approach frequently leads to a business that is busy but unprofitable. Getting your pricing right from the start is essential to building a sustainable business.

Start with your costs. Add up every cost associated with delivering your service: materials, your time, overheads, insurance, software, and any other direct or indirect costs. This gives you your cost base. Your price must cover this cost base before you can make any profit at all.

Next, consider your market. What are your competitors charging? Where do you want to position yourself? Pricing at the lower end of the market is not always the right strategy. If your service is genuinely better, pricing too low can actually undermine your credibility. Customers often associate price with quality.

Build your target profit margin into your price. If you want to make a 30% margin, divide your costs by 0.7 to get your selling price. This ensures that every sale contributes to your profitability rather than simply covering your costs.

Review your pricing regularly. As your costs change and your reputation grows, your prices should reflect that. Many business owners set their prices once and never revisit them, leaving money on the table year after year.
